Postcards from Paradise #10 ~ Fiery Dragons Sighted!

Yet more strange and beautiful places
waited for us on our journey North
Holy Island
Northumberland
There's a strong spiritual presence here
as indicated by the name,
 being the base for Christian
evangelising in AD 635.
Lindisfarne Priory is famous for
the illuminated manuscript known as the
the Lindisfarne Gospels ~
illustrated Latin copy of
Mathew, Mark, Luke  & John.
thought to have been made here in 700s
It was reported by The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle ~
"Vikings raided Lindisfarne in 793
In this year fierce, foreboding omens
came over the land of Northumbria.
There were excessive whirlwinds, lightning storms,
and fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky.
These signs were followed by great famine,
on January 8th the ravaging of heathen men
destroyed God's church at Lindisfarne".
The island itself is an oddity
it joins the mainland by a causeway
 of about 3 miles,
you must check the tides before
venturing there otherwise
you're likely to be stranded overnight,
who would want to risk that?
With all those ~

you have taken me to a place of wonder and great history.
i had never heard of this inlet...or the fiery dragons...
your world has a mystical allure and i love that you have tucked me in your pocket and secreted me along.

that sunset....breath taking!
I had heard of this but not in the way you personally experienced it--in words and photos. Magical!
This is wonderful, Sue. I love the history, the mystery and the photographs which are fabulous. What a historic journey you have been on , risktaking with fiery dragons and infidels destroying God's church. My heavens. Very exciting stuff. I love this. I did not know this particular history and it is exciting to learn it. Thank you for sharing.
xoxoxo,
Noelle

I once was close to visiting Lindisfarne... but because of the tides we didn't and had a lovely picnic at the beach instead!

Don't Blink

What rate ticketh clock? I blinked and a whole year passed or, was I dreaming? Somehow I seemed to have lost a whole year, it appears what I thought happened last year happened the year before! My sister who is twelve years my senior warned me about this ~ "wait until you get to my age then time really does fly"! Of course we'll never be able to confer! Still, living in the moment can feel like forever, because it is, I'm trying to make each beautiful moment count! Sharing with Haiku my Heart Recuerda mi Corazon
